Haredis won't protest Jerusalem Gay Pride parade to minimize its publicity

The Ultra-Orthodox Jewish community has indicated that their protest of the Gay Pride parade in Jerusalem, scheduled for next Thursday, will be less significant than in previous years.

The parade in Jerusalem is to take place on June 26, according to the Jerusalem Open House Organization which runs and organizes the event.

The police have authorized the event, Army Radio reported, although they have not produced an official permit and are waiting for a final approval from the Jerusalem municipality, generally only attained a few days before the parade takes place.

Extreme Ultra-Orthodox Jews attempt to sabotage the parade every year. Right-wing activists have already petitioned the High Court of Justice demanding to outlaw this year's event, claiming that in past years the parade did not live up to its commitments of conducting a modest and "Jerusalem-style" parade.

The High Court of Justice is expected to rule on the matter, however due to past events, it is likely that the court will rule in favor of the parade's participants and will allow the parade to take place.

There are signs that the protest will be less problematic than in past years as the Ultra-Orthodox community now understands that their protests attract publicity to what they view as a sinful parade and expose their children to the gay and lesbian communities.

Within the political arena there have also been attempts to prevent the parade from taking place through legal measures. Two weeks ago, religious Knesset members, among them Eli Gabbay (National Union-National Religious Party) and David Azoulay, demanded that police take the necessary measures to prevent the parade because it poses a danger to the public.
