Top police officer, on Haham murder: Israel isn't gangland Chicago
By Shahar Ilan, Haaretz Correspondant

The head of the police's investigation and intelligence division on Monday rejected claims that the Prison Service did not act upon prior information pertaining to the murder last week of a top attorney, declaring that "Israel is not [gangland] Chicago."

Major-General Yohanan Danino, the police officer, was referring to the killing of attorney Yoram Haham on Wednesday evening near the Nokia Stadium in Tel Aviv, when a car bomb exploded as he was driving by.

Danino called the allegations against the police's handling of the case a drama that "has no grasp on reality." He made the comments during an emergency meeting held by the Knesset Internal Affairs and Environment Committee.

The senior police officer further stated that, "When there is background information suggesting a credible threat, we take every possible step."

Danino also stressed: "Haham's murder is not one of the incidents that we as a society, with an law enforcement system, accept. To take the life of a regular person, who was part of the legal system in broad daylight." He added that the police are aiming for a 40 percent reduction in violent criminal offenses including car theft and burglary within four years.

Yitzhak Ben Bassat, Haham's nephew, said during the discussion that there is an obligation to prevent the continuation of attacks against members of the public which in turn affects the foundations of Israeli society.

"I have been hurt by what has happened to my uncle. I admired him - he grew up in a hard-working family and built himself up with his own hands. He was a brilliant lawyer, razor-sharp, who provided a real service to the legal system. We hope that Israeli society won't keep quiet and will not rest until occurrences like this that have disrupted our daily lives will be condemned and not repeated."
