Israel-Syria talks enter second round in Turkey
By Barak Ravid, Haaretz Correspondent and News Agencies

Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's close advisers, Yoram Turbowicz and Shalom Turgeman, embarked on a covert visit to Turkey on Sunday to prepare for a second round of indirect negotiations with Syria.

After the two aides were noticably absent from the weekly cabinet meeting in Jerusalem, the Prime Minister's bureau conveyed that they had traveled to Paris ahead of French President Nicolas Sarkozy's visit to Israel next week.

It seems the two will land in Paris only on Monday night and will meet with Sarkozy on Tuesday.

Turgeman, Olmert's chief diplomatic aide, told foreign diplomats over the weekend that talks which have so far been conducted via Turkish mediation may soon move to the next stage.

Turgeman said he did not believe the talks would be affected by the latest corruption investigation against Olmert, who is suspected of having illicitly received hundreds of thousands of dollars from a Jewish American millionaire.

Israel and Syria announced last month that they were resuming negotiations using Turkish mediators.

Turgeman and Turbowicz have taken part in a number of meetings in Istanbul over moving the negotiations forward, but no progress has been announced. Talks in Turkey may resume at the end of the week, sources said.

Meanwhile, officials in Paris said Sunday that two top advisers to Sarkozy have met with Syrian President Bashar Assad in the latest sign of a thaw in bilateral ties.

The presidential Elysee palace said the talks were useful and constructive and focused largely on bilateral ties, Lebanon, Israeli-Syrian relations and an upcoming Union for the Mediterranean meeting.

Syria's official news agency said: "The talks were constructive, reflecting agreement on the need to reinforce Syrian-French relations and to continue efforts to achieve a just and comprehensive peace in the region."

On Saturday, Sarkozy met with U.S. President George W. Bush in the United States and discussed the Israel-Syria talks. Sarkozy told reporters after the meeting that Syria must distance itself from Iran and its nuclear ambitions. Bush and Sarkozy have spoken with one voice on Syria, with Bush warned Assad to cease harboring terrorists and working closely with Iran.
