Children seized after daughter comes to school bearing swastika mark

WINNIPEG - Child welfare officials seized a 2-year-old boy and a 7-year-old girl from their home after the girl came to school with a swastika and other white supremacist markings on her body.

Child and Family Services is seeking a permanent order of guardianship because of the behavior of the father, an alleged neo-Nazi, and ongoing concerns for the children's safety. The agency views the mother as unfit because of her relationship with her husband.

"The children may be at risk due to the parents' behavior and associates. The parents might endanger the emotional well-being of the children," the agency said in a court affidavit. "There are also concerns about parental drug and alcohol use in the home," the agency wrote.

Constable Pat Chabidon confirmed that the father "was a subject of interest in a hate crime type investigation in 2005," but that no charges were filed.

The children are currently staying at the home of a relative, and the mother has visitation rights.

After the chidren were seized, the mother contacted Paul Fromm, one of Canada's most notorious white supremacists, for advice. "I can see a school not wanting a child to be a political billboard. But that shouldn't be enough of a reason to take the kids away," commented Fromm, who is director of the Canadian Association for Free Expression.

A judge will hear the case on June 23. It is not clear at this time whether the parents have legal counsel.
