Report: Police learned 2 months ago of plot to harm top attorney

Prisons' Service authorities were tipped off about two months ago to an underworld plot to harm prominent crime attorney Yoram Haham who was killed earlier this week by a car bomb in central Tel Aviv, Army Radio reported on Friday.

Police liaisons received documents to the effect but did not transfer them to the appropriate sources as they did not seem appropriate at the time, the radio reported.

Haham's body was brought to rest Thursday at the Yarkon cemetery in Tel Avi, a day after the SUV he was driving exploded in a mob-style hit. The funeral drew several hundred people, including Haham's former colleagues, clients, family and friends.

The detectives investigating his murder say they have not yet determined whether the top criminal attorney was hit because of his work, or over a personal dispute.

Haham was killed when a car bomb went off inside his SUV on Wednesday evening, as he was driving near Nokia Stadium in Tel Aviv.

In cases of this sort, police usually examine all of the lawyer's criminal cases and clients, as well as any personal disputes.

One of these disputes involves a 54-year-old businessman whom the media has mentioned as a possible suspect. The man told Haaretz Thursday that he had nothing to do with the hit.

The businessman's name - which is currently blocked for publication under a gag order - was mentioned in conjunction with the hit after it became known that the man had accused Haham of stealing money from him and having an affair with his wife before moving in with her.

"I never imagined this could happen," the businessman told Haaretz.

Police are also investigating a lead involving reputed crime figure Assi Abutbul - Haham's latest client. Haham was defending Abutbul, who along with 23 other defendants has been charged with extortion and threatening a businessman from the Gush Dan area.

Police sources said the investigation into Abutbul's possible connection to the murder would focus on grievances that Abutbul or some of his codefendants might have had about how Haham handled the case.

The same scrutiny will be applied to other cases Haham had handled.

The Tel Aviv District's central unit will be handling the investigation. This is the same unit that has been trying - unsuccessfully - to solve the 2006 murder of attorney Anat Plinner. However, it did solve the 2004 murder of Judge Adi Azar.
