Former IDF head Dan Halutz. (Doron Golan / Jini)
Dan Halutz to publish memoir on service, Second Lebanon War
By Amos Harel
Tags: IDF, memoir, Halutz

Dan Halutz, who stepped down as Israel Defense Forces chief of staff in the wake of criticism of how he handled the Second Lebanon War, will be giving a detailed account of the war for the first time in a memoir.

The lieutenant general (reserves) is currently writing the book, which will follow his military career through Israel's war against Hezbollah two years ago in Lebanon.

Halutz has largely remained silent since he resigned in February 2007. He gave a brief response to the severe criticism against him by the Winograd Committee, which investigated Israel's handling of the war, in an interview with Yedioth Ahronoth a few months ago. Besides a rare public appearance in Be'er Sheva last month, the former IDF chief has kept out of the public's eye.

His testimony to the Winograd committee did not refer to allegations against him, and much of its content was censored.

Halutz's memoir will be published in a few months, and will be the first by a member of Israel's senior leadership during the war. Former defense minister Amir Peretz, who also stepped down over criticism of his handling of the war, has so far refrained from publishing a memoir.

Since retiring from the army, Halutz has turned to the private sector, and is now the CEO of Kamur Motors, a company that imports BMWs.
