Report: Government panel to probe Ramon sex crime inquiry
By Haaretz Service

The government will approve the establishment of a commission of inquiry that will probe the police's handling of the sexual harassment investigation against Vice Premier Haim Ramon, according to a report broadcast Wednesday on Channel 2. The panel will also have broader powers than those granted to the Winograd committee which investigated the government's management of the Second Lebanon War.

The Justice Ministry had elected to investigate the matter by setting up an internal inquiry into the police investigation, which included the use of wiretapping. Retired judge Natan Brenner was tapped to lead the committee. Earlier this year, however, Justice Minister Daniel Friedmann sought to upgrade the committee's status to the equivalent of the Winograd committee. Brenner, however, refused Friedmann's request.

The justice minister is now mulling whether to accept the recommendation of retired judge Verdi Zeiler to establish a governmental inquiry into the investigative mishaps in the Ramon case.

Ramon's attorneys demanded an official state commission of inquiry into the wiretappings. Specifically, they sought to ascertain whether the existence of the tapes were concealed from Ramon before and during the minister's trial. Zeiler found that "a state commission of inquiry seems disproportionate, given the fact that there is a more moderate path which allows for a probe that is no less effective, and the reference is to a government committee of inquiry as is prescribed by law."
