Palestinians: IDF kills 4 in Gaza; Negev man wounded by mortar

The Israel Defense Forces killed four Palestinians - one militant and tthree civilians - in three separate incidents in the Gaza Strip on Wednesday, and an Israeli man was lightly wounded by a mortar shell fired from the coastal territory.

The violence came as members of the diplomatic-security cabinet met to discuss a truce with Hamas in Gaza. It was decided in the meeting not to launch a much-touted invasion of the Gaza Strip in order to give Egyptian-brokered truce efforts more time to succeed.

n Wednesday afternoon, an IDF spokeswoman reported that an air strike was carried out in the northern Gaza Strip, killing a civilian. Earlier, a nine-year-old girl was killed by an IDF tank shell.

In a cross-border operation, IDF troops shot and killed a Hamas gunman and a civilian, medical workers and Hamas officials said. The army said a ground force had opened fire at militants who had been attempting to fire rockets into Israel from a built-up area in the Strip.

Gaza militants fire rockets and mortars into Israel almost daily.

Dr. Moaiya Hassanain, a Gaza Health Ministry official, identified the dead girl as Hadeel al-Smari and said two adult relatives living in her family's compound near Khan Yunis were wounded in the attack. Associated Press Television News footage showed that the girl's head had been blown off.

A Hamas gunman was also killed by IDF fire, just before a mortar shell fired from Gaza struck a paint factory at Kibbutz Nir Oz. A similar attack last Thursday on the same factory killed Amnon Rosenberg, 51, a father of three from nearby Kibbutz Nirim. The mortar strike also caused damage to the factory and set a storage room ablaze.

The incidents occurred near the border where militants fired 30 rockets into Israel on Tuesday, the army said.

On Tuesday, an Israel Air Force strike killed at least three members of a Hamas mortar crew on Tuesday in the Gaza Strip, the Palestinian Islamic group said.

Meanwhile, IDF troops arrested 28 wanted Palestinians in the West Bank early Wednesday, Israel Radio reported. Militants opened fire on IDF soldiers in the West Bank village of Kalil, near Nablus, but the gunfire caused neither casualties nor damage.
