Teenager who murdered for 'thrill' wants life sentence commuted
By Tomer Zarchin, Haaretz Correspondent

bmitted a request to have his sentence commuted. Late last month Stierman's mother, Yael Roseman, sent a letter to the committee objecting to Horev's sentence being commuted. "My son Assaf was murdered on the night of December 5, 1996, when he was just 18," Roseman wrote. "It has been brought to my attention by the State Prosecutor's Office that a request was submitted by my son's murderer, whose name I cannot speak, to commute a life sentence that was imposed on him by the Tel Aviv District Court. I wish to express to the committee discussing the matter my strong and total opposition to any alleviation of his sentence [...] My son Assaf will never be able to approach the committee with a request for alleviation. My son Assaf is buried in Kfar Sava with no possibility of alleviating his sentence and ours."

Roseman urged the committee to take her family's constant suffering into account, to remember "who is the victim and who is the murderer," and bear in mind that Horev "has never expressed remorse for his actions."

On Tuesday Roseman told Haaretz she hopes the committee will deny Horev's request, and any requests sure to follow.

Horev's parents were unavailable for comment yesterday.

The murder case

On the day of the murder, teenagers Sigalit Haimovich, Ro'i Horev and Lihi Gluzman were at Haimovich's home in Kfar Sava, smoking marijuana. Stierman passed by in front of the house, and allegedly taunted Horev. According to the verdict, the three did not know who the person making the taunts was, but that did not prevent Haimovich from calling on the other two to kill him. Horev took a pair of daggers and Haimovich took a pair of daggers and gloves, and they set off in the direction of a grove nearby.

Horev went to look for Stierman, and persuaded him to come to the grove. Stierman sat down beside Gluzman and Haimovich, and after a few minutes Horev put a choke hold on his neck and stabbed his upper body, while Haimovich used her fists to punch him. Stierman tried to break away and begged for his life.

The court determined that Gluzman was seized by panic throughout the assault, and she shouted at Horev and Haimovich to stop. When they ignored her, she gathered her belongings and fled to her Herzliya home.

Horev asked Haimovich for a rock, and used it to bash Stierman's head in, until Stierman collapsed on the ground.

In sentencing Haimovich to life, the Tel Aviv District Court ruled it "murder for the sake of murder. A cruel and loathsome act of evil. Without motive. Without the slightest bit of logic. Without taunting. Without any apparent reason. Without any compassion, and without any hesitation of remorse. Just like that, one evening, in a pastoral neighborhood of a city, against someone who happened to cross the accuseds' path at the time."

The case was cracked in December 2000 after Sandrine Horev, Horev's wife at the time, filed a police complaint alleging spousal abuse. She told investigators that Horev had confessed to her that he had murdered Stierman. Horev immediately admitted his part in the murder and fingered his accomplices. Gluzman was arrested in December 2000 and Haimovich in 2001 on returning from abroad.
