Fugitive contractor Yona, who left families penniless, to be extradited to Israel

Officials in the police National Fraud Investigations Unit are expected to travel to Italy on Thursday where they are due to assume custody of the fugitive real estate contractor Boaz Yonah and to escort him back to Israel, where he is likely to be indicted for fraud in the coming weeks.

The former CEO of the failed Heftsiba construction company announced last month that he has decided to forgo further legal attempts to prevent his extradition from Italy. He said he is willing to return to Israel and face trial, though it is not yet known when that might happen.

Yona's lawyers, Israeli Yair Golan and an Italian attorney named Alberto Albrini, announced they would not appeal the decision in January in a Venice court to extradite Yona. The Supreme Court in Rome was scheduled to hear the appeal at the end of the month. Yona was arrested in Italy nine months ago, after fleeing there from Israel in August 2007.

Yona made his decision to return to Israel based on his lawyer's advice. Golan said last month: "In light of the fact that the legal proceedings in Italy will take a long time, Boaz Yona chose to return to Israel ... The contacts between Boaz Yona's lawyers and the prosecution are continuing."

The lawyers said he was suffering in isolation from his family.

The Justice Ministry spokesman clarified last month that despite various reports, no agreement has been signed with Yona, but negotiations over a plea bargain are continuing. In addition, the spokesman said the deal would include an agreement over Yona's sentence and institution of a mechanism for compensating the victims of his company's downfall.

Among the many crimes Yona was charged with, and which the extradition request listed, were fraud, forgery, theft, money laundering and securities-law violations.

According to evidence in the hands of the police and prosecution, Yona defrauded hundreds of apartment buyers as well as the banks.

He allegedly stole and fraudulently received over NIS 300 million. Other charges, such as forgery, cite possible sums of over NIS 1 billion.
