Alzheimer's patients describe degrading process to get care

Michael Shani has been suffering from Alzheimer's disease for the last three years, and 74-year-old Esther Rotenberg the last four. Both are undoubtedly in need of a full-time caregiver.

But the National Insurance Institute, which approves state-funded assistance, forces many Alzheimer's patients to jump through hoops to secure the care they need.

any patients in Israel opt to pay caretakers out of their own pockets. But the numbers suggest multitudes of elderly citizens who can't fund their own assistance and as a result, suffer alone.
