Last update - 14:57 10/06/2008 Brothers in 'honor killing' released to house arrest due to legal delays By Ruth Singer-Heruti, Haaretz Correspondent Tags: honor killing, law, Israel  The Tel Aviv District Court instructed Tuesday to release to house arrest brothers Salame and Muhammad Abu Ghanem, who allegedly murdered their sister Hamda in an 'honor killing,' due to delays in their court trial. Two years have passed since indictments were filed against the brothers for murdering their 19-year-old sister and the end of the trial is nowhere in sight - even though the two confessed to the crime during the investigation. Legal foot-dragging has prevented the Tel Aviv District Court from even setting dates for the trial sessions. For a year and a half, the court has not conducted sessions on the matter, other than to set new dates. Advertisement In a Supreme Court session in May, Justice Esther Hayut was asked to extend the remand of the two for the seventh time. But this time, Judge Hayut decided to take into consideration the accused's rights to "freedom based on a presumption of innocence," in light of the fact that there is no way to know when the trial might end. By law, defendants may be held for only nine months. After that, the prosecution must request an extension from the Supreme Court. In the hearing on their release, the prosecutor unsuccessfully attempted to persuade the justice that the two brothers were a flight risk since they are facing a definite life sentence.
