Poll: 90% of public believes Israeli leadership rife with corruption

An Israel Democracy Institute poll has found that 90 percent of the public believes Israel's leadership is riddled with corruption.

According to the annual report on the state of Israeli democracy, presented on Monday to President Shimon Peres, only nine percent of the respondents said there was little corruption in Israel and over half (51 percent) thought that corruption was a prerequisite to becoming part of the political elite.

In addition, the report found that after many years of approval the Supreme Court was not a trusted institution, as such, the public's support for it has eroded from 61 percent approval in 2007 to 49 percent this year.

The public's trust in the office of prime minister was only 17 percent, the report found. Prime Minister Ehud Olmert is currently under suspicion of illicitly accepting hundreds of thousands of dollars from American fundraiser Morris (Moshe) Talansky.

Public trust in Israel's presidency was also very low - 22 percent - after declining from 47 percent in 2007. This is apparently in light of allegations of sexual assault against former President Moshe Katsav.

The most favored institution was the Israel Defense Forces, trusted by 71 percent of the survey's respondents.

The media was trusted by 36 percent of respondents and the police by 33 percent, while political parties garnered a mere 15 percent.
