Hamas: IAF strike kills 3 Gaza mortar gunners

An Israel Air Force strike killed at least three members of a Hamas mortar crew on Tuesday in the Gaza Strip, the Palestinian Islamic group said, as Gaza militants pounded the western Negev with rocket and mortar fire.

Gaza militants on Tuesday struck the western Negev with four Qassam rockets and ten mortar shells. The shells hit near the Nahal Oz border crossing. There were no reports of casualties in the attacks.

The Israel Defense Forces said it carried out two airstrikes northeast of Gaza City after Palestinian militants bombarded southern Israel with mortar shells.

Hamas has claimed responsibility for the mortar fire.

An official in Gaza's ruling Hamas said three members of a mortar crew were killed and two others wounded.

Gaza health officials said four people were wounded in separate IAF strikes, apparently including in their toll the two Hamas militants hurt in the attack on the mortar crew.

Egypt has been trying to broker a truce to end violence on the Israel-Gaza border. Israel's cabinet, at its weekly meeting on Tuesday, was expected to discuss ceasefire prospects and possible broader military action should Egypt's efforts fail.

"Israel's military action clearly indicates that Israel not interested in achieving calm," Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri said. "Therefore they must be ready to pay the price."
