PA: Rice to hold 3-way talks with Livni, chief Palestinian negotiator Qureia

United States Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice plans to hold a three-way meeting next week with Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni and former Palestinian prime minister Ahmed Qureia, a senior Palestinian official said on Monday.

The announcement by Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat came after the U.S. proposed holding trilateral talks with Israel and the Palestinians in order to accelerate negotiations on the core issues and bridge the major gaps that still exist.

Marred by disputes over Israeli settlement expansion and violence in the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip, U.S.-backed peace talks have shown little sign of progress since they were launched at a conference in Annapolis, Maryland in November.

A corruption investigation against Prime Minister Ehud Olmert may further dim the chances of a deal this year, Israeli, Palestinian and Western officials say.

Erekat said the three-way meeting between Rice, Livni and Qureia - and the chief negotiators - would take place on June 15 in Jerusalem.

"It is to review the negotiations in all its aspects," Erekat said.

Rice, who will visit Israel and the occupied West Bank, convened a similar three-way meeting earlier this year.

Qureia said on Saturday that the Palestinians were still conducting talks with their Israeli counterparts despite "wide gaps" in positions. The two sides agreed in their last meeting to begin drafting a position paper in an attempt to narrow those gaps, he said.

Meanwhile, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas will meet with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak in Cairo Monday, where they are expected to discuss the status of ongoing Israeli-Palestinian negotiations.

According to Egyptian sources, Abbas is expected to present Mubarak with a report detailing the expanded construction of houses for Israelis in East Jerusalem. He is also expected to discuss recent efforts to bring reconciliation between Fatah and Hamas.
