Berlin Jewish leader backs publishing Mein Kampf with commentary

A prominent member of Berlin's Jewish community came out Sunday in favor of publishing Adolf Hitler's Mein Kampf with commentary.

Lala Suesskind, chairwoman of the Jewish community in the German capital, said putting out the banned text would no longer break any taboos.

"The text opens the eyes of many people to Hitler's intentions and provides evidence for what should have been known at the time," Suesskind told DPA.

Suesskind is not the only German Jewish leader in favor of publishing the contentious book. Stephan Kramer, general secretary of Germany's Central Council of Jews, recently told German radio that he supported the publication of the book.

Most people could read and understand the text of Hitler's ideological book, written while he was in prison in the early 1920s for fomenting revolt and first published in 1925. But some would benefit from a commentary, Suesskind said.

Regarding another Hitler issue being debated in Germany - about the inclusion of the Nazi fuehrer among the wax models of the new Madame Tussaud's wax museum opening in central Berlin next month, Suesskind said: "Better to have him in the wax cabinet and out of the minds of many people."

Stephan Kramer, general secretary of the Central Council of German Jews, has also backed publishing Hitler's book, adding that the council would be happy to provide input for the commentary.

The state of Bavaria has owned the book's copyright since shortly after World War II ended and has strenuously fought attempts to republish the notorious work.

The copyright expires in 2015, 70 years after the Nazi leader committed suicide in Berlin on April 30, 1945, as Soviet forces closed in.
