Defense official: Mofaz remark on Iran strike is not state policy
By Haaretz Service and News Agencies

Defense officials and political pundits rounded on Transportation Minister Shaul Mofaz on Sunday, two days after he called an Israeli attack on Iran "unavoidable" due to the lack of progress on curbing its nuclear program.

Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's office on Sunday distanced itself from the remark. Olmert's spokesman Mark Regev said the prime minister stated Israel's policy clearly last week during a trip to Washington.

At a briefing with reporters, Olmert called for tighter international sanctions while warning that a more effective solution led by the United States was drawing closer.

Mofaz said in a newspaper interview on Friday that "if Iran continues with its program for developing nuclear weapons, we will attack it. The sanctions are ineffective. Attacking Iran, in order to stop its nuclear plans, will be unavoidable."

One senior defense official said Sunday that Mofaz's remarks "did not reflect policy" and "risked making it even harder for Israel to persuade more countries to step up their sanctions against Iran."

Meanwhile, Deputy Defense Minister Matan Vilnai accused Mofaz, a former military chief who is now a top challenger to the embattled Prime Minister Ehud Olmert in the Kadima party, of using the comment to further his campaign for party primaries.

"Turning one of the most strategic security issues into a political game, using it for the internal purposes of a would-be campaign in Kadima, is something that must not be done," Vilnai told Israel Radio.

Mofaz's remarks helped drive up oil prices by nearly 9 percent to a record $139 a barrel on Friday and drew a circumspect response from Washington, which has championed UN sanctions against Iran while hinting that force could be a last resort.

The comments also drew a storm of international criticism and prompted Iran to lodge a complaint with the United Nations.

Asked about the flurry of criticism, Mofaz aide Talia Somech said he had spoken "out of his more than 40-year-long commitment to the national security of Israel."

"We would like his statements to be taken at face value, and not be given alternative interpretations," she told Reuters.

Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Mohammed ElBaradei, on Saturday rebuked Mofaz's comment in an interview with the German newspaper Der Spiegel.

"With unilateral military actions, countries are undermining international agreements, and we are at a historic turning point," the nuclear watchdog chief said.

Iran meanwhile demanded action from the UN Security Council in a letter submitted Saturday by Iranian UN Ambassador Mohammed Khazaee.

"Such a dangerous threat against a sovereign state and a member of the United Nations constitutes a manifest violation of international law and contravenes the most fundamental principles of the Charter of the United Nations, and, thus, requires a resolute and clear response on the part of the United Nations, particularly the Security Council," Khazaee's letter to Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, dated June 6, said.

White House spokeswoman Dana Perino said Friday that the United States was committed to solving the Iranian nuclear threat through diplomatic multilateral means, in a response to Mofaz's statements Friday.

"I understand that Israel is very concerned about their future and their safety when they have a neighbor in their region - Iran - that says they want to wipe them off the map," Perino told reporters. "We are trying to solve this diplomatically," she explained.

Asked whether the United States was keeping military options open as a last resort with Iran, she said U.S. President George W. Bush had always said he "would never take any options off the table" but that Washington was pursuing multilateral diplomacy.
