IDF kills 1, wounds 17 Palestinians in Gaza action
By Haaretz Correspondent and News Agencies , By Yuval Azoulay

The Israel Air Force attacked a Hamas position in the northern Gaza Strip early Friday morning, injuring at least 15 Palestinians. In a different incident, one gunman was killed and two were wounded during a battle with Israeli ground troops in northern Gaza.

Also Friday morning, an Israel Defense Forces soldier who was part of a team of military engineers working near the Gaza border was injured when the force came under fire from a Palestinian sniper. The soldier suffered light to moderate wounds and was evacuated to Soroka Medical Center in Be'er Sheva for treatment.

The air force strike, on Beit Lahiya, was in response to a Palestinian mortar attack on Thursday that killed an Israeli worker at a factory in Kibbutz Nir Oz.

Yesterday, at least 12 mortar shells were fired at Israel from northern Gaza, but no injuries or damage were reported.

In addition, four Qassam rockets were launched at Israel on Friday. One of them hit the parking lot of Sapir College in Sderot and caused damage to a several vehicles in the lot. The other three rockets hit open fields near Kibbutz Gabim.

At this Tuesday's cabinet meeting, Defense Minister Ehud Barak and his deputy, Matan Vilnai, intend to demand the immediate transfer of the NIS 400 million required to implement the second stage of a program to reinforce homes in communities near the Gaza Strip. The plan includes the construction of security rooms in homes within seven kilometers of the Strip, as well as grants for families who prefer to reinforce their homes themselves, in line with instructions from the IDF's Home Front Command.

About 9,000 Palestinians marched to the Rafah crossing, on the Gaza-Egypt border, on Friday to protest the closure of all the crossings in and out of the Strip. Demonstrators pushed at a gate separating Gaza from Egypt and threw rocks at Egypt, but were repelled by Hamas police.
