PA officials say they want Abbas to run for re-election in 2010

On Saturday, senior Fatah Party officials said they are trying to
persuade Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to run for re-election. Abbas has said he wouldn't run in the 2010 balloting.

But Abbas confidant Ahmed Qureia, the chief Palestinian negotiator in talks with Israel, said Saturday that the president would be their Fatah Party's candidate.

An adviser to Abbas said he hadn't agreed yet, but that Fatah intended to
nominate him. No date has been set for the nomination.

Qureia on Friday said Israeli and Palestinian negotiators have agreed to start drafting elements of a proposed peace accord.

Queria clear the decision did not necessarily reflect agreement on the major issues that have tormented peace talks for years - final borders, the status of disputed Jerusalem and the fate of Palestinian refugees.

But this would be the first time since negotiations resumed more than six months ago that anything on these divisive questions would be put to paper.

"We agreed with the Israelis to begin writing the positions," Qureia told reporters late Friday.
