Olmert aides: Progress made with U.S. on forging common view on Iran
By Barak Ravid, Haaretz Correspondent, and Agencies

Prime Minister Ehud Olmert is due back in Israel on Friday after a two-day visit to the United States where aides said progress was made in forming a common view on Iran's nuclear program.

The sources said there had also been progress in Israel's request for advanced fighter aircraft, and the inclusion of the Israel Air Force in the USAF global early warning system against incoming ballistic missiles.

A senior source in Olmert's entourage said Thursday that Olmert told the U.S. administration that Iran had still not reached the point of no return as far as nuclear expertise is concerned. It is therefore paramount that sanctions be stepped up, Olmert said, according to the source.

"Iran is letting the entire world know that it is there, but it is not there," Olmert said, referring to Iran's nuclear capabilities. "And this is the reason sanctions are important."

Olmert voiced optimism on stopping Iran's nuclear program after talks with President George W. Bush.

"Every day we take another step forward on the way to stopping Iran's effort to arm itself with nuclear weapons," he was quoted as saying Wednesday.

"I now have fewer questions about the constraints, timetables and necessary resolve when it comes to Iran."

Olmert did not elaborate on what, if any, Israeli-U.S. plans had been created for curbing the Iranian nuclear program. But his aides said he had cemented the sale by the United States of advanced F-35 warplanes to Israel, as well as bilateral cooperation on missile-defense systems.

Those deals signaled Washington's desire to ensure Israel's security in the face of strategic threats, the aides said.

Also Thursday, Olmert spoke by telephone with the two presumptive presidential nominees, Republican John McCain and Democrat Barack Obama. He also spoke with Senator
Hillary Clinton, who is expected to announce she is stepping out of the race for the Democratic nomination.
