Third fatality from Gaza mortars in last month

Amnon Rosenberg, 51, who was killed yesterday when a mortar shell fired by Palestinian terrorists in the Gaza Strip hit a paint factory at Kibbutz Nir Oz in the western Negev, was a father of three from nearby Kibbutz Nirim. He worked as the warehouse manager of the Nirlat paint factory. He is the third person to be killed by mortar fire from Gaza in the last month; the other two were Jimmy Kedoshim of Kibbutz Kfar Aza and Shuli Katz of Kibbutz Gvaram.

"We were devastated by the news," kibbutz member Dedi Rubinstein said. "Amnon was the pillar of his family, a strong, hard working man."

While serving as a career army officer, Rosenberg married a member of Kibbutz Tal and the couple moved to Nirim. They had three children, Dor, 27, Eldad, 22, and Yarden, 12.

Rosenberg liked karate and was a black belt, fourth dan. "He was a children's karate instructor and taught yoga. He was also a tractor driving teacher, and many of the youngsters in the area got their first tractor license from him," Rubinstein said.

Kibbutz Nirim published an obituary for Rosenberg that said: "Today we lost a friend who was always happy to help others. Solidarity was of paramount importance to him, and he labored to pursue it in practice."

"We urge the government to help us continue to live safely in the region," the kibbutz statement said.

Despite the mourning, a wedding was held in the kibbutz yesterday, of a kibbutz woman and her fiance. "Sadness and joy mingle; the wedding is overshadowed by Amnon's death," Rubinstein said. (Fadi Eyadat)
