Labor party leaning toward dissolving Knesset in June
By Mazal Mualem, Haaretz Correspondent

Labor party ministers are leaning toward supporting a vote to dissolve the Knesset in June over police allegations that Prime Minister Ehud Olmert accepted illicit funds from American billionaire Morris Talansky.

Labor party ministers met on Thursday to discuss the latest political developments caused by the Talanksy corruption affair. It appears that a growing number of party members want to vote in favor of dissolving the Knesset on June 18th.

Labor head and Defense Minister Ehud Barak's recent remarks that "the current situation [with Olmert] cannot go on" apparently have influenced many party members to support going to elections.

Labor MK Eitan Cabel said Thursday that if Kadima wants to avoid elections they must hold primaries soon, so that a replacement can be found for Olmert as soon as possible.

"If Kadima wants stability it cannot wait until September to hold primaries," Cabel said.

In response to the Labor party's threats that they will dissolve the Knesset, Kadima MK Yoel Hasson warned that "if the Labor party votes in favor of elections, Barak and the other Labor ministers will be fired from the government."

Shas may also support the call for early elections if child welfare stipends are not increased.
