Rights groups ask court to order end to construction on 'private Palestinian land'

Rights groups Yesh Din and B'tselem petitioned the High Court of Justice Wednesday, along with five Palestinians from the West Bank town of Ein-Yabrud, and demanded that the state halt the construction of nine houses in the West Bank settlement of Ofra.

The Palestinian petitioners, who maintain that the homes are being built on private Palestinian-owned land, also demand that the state prevent the homes from becoming occupied.

The petitioners seek to compel state authorities to carry out previously issued demolition orders, as well as to issue additional temporary orders preventing residents from occupying the homes and from hooking up to electricity, water and plumbing systems.

Two months ago, Vice Premier Haim Ramon said that Ofra, one of the first settlements in the West Bank, was built almost entirely on Arab lands. Over recent months, B'tselem located the owners of the land and obtained the deeds to the said lands. According to B'tselem, the documents prove that Ofra was built almost exclusively on private Arab lands.

According to the petitioners, the Civil Administration promised that the buildings would be razed six months ago. However, the petition states that the construction continues as the state turns a blind eye to the matter.
