Maccabi Netanya striker Itay Shechter was released from the Israel Defense Forces yesterday, following a medical operation to repair an injury sustained to his shoulder. Shechter was originally slated for release only in December, but an army medical committee authorized his early release. As a result, he will be eligible to try to play for a European team as early as this summer. Shechter will begin undergoing physiotherapy in 10 days. (Haaretz Sports Staff)

Maccabi Tel Aviv forward Omri Casspi had his first practice with the NBA's Detroit Pistons yesterday. The practice was attended by Pistons General Manager Joe Dumars and head scout Tony Ranzoni, and led by Michael Curry, the leading candidate for the team's coaching position. "It was fun," Casspi said following the practice. "I worked hard and did what I know how to do. I hope everything will be OK. This is just the beginning of the journey." (Haaretz Sports Staff)

Effi Birenboim will be announced Friday as manager of Maccabi Tel Aviv, for a salary of $250,000 a year. Yesterday Birenboim, who coached Bnei Hasharon this past season, met with team chairman Shimon Mizrahi and owner David Federman. Outgoing manager Zvika Sherf is not expected to retain any position at the club, and Birenboim is expected to bring assistant coach Roi Haggai from Bnei Hasharon. Maccabi assistant coach Guy Goodes - rumored to be in contact with Birenboim's now former team - may stay on at Maccabi or be replaced by former Hapoel Jerusalem coach Dan Shamir. (Vered Cohen)

Bnot Herzliya and Hapoel Petah Tikva will battle tonight in the third and final playoff game in the women's handball championship. Herzliya, which achieved a historic win last year, will enjoy home court advantage in the title game. Hapoel succeeded Monday in forcing the decisive game after an outstanding showing at home, despite being forced to play with almost no substitutions. (Rami Hipsh)
