Last update - 11:44 05/06/2008 Police conduct second reenactment of cop-napping By Roni Singer-Heruti Tags: kidnapping, ashdod  An internal police committee investigating the kidnapping of a policewoman by a detainee, who was shot to death after fleeing with her in a squad car, carried out yet another reenactment of the incident Wednesday. Wednesday's reenactment, the second in two days, focused on the police chase, which involved vehicles from the Southern and Central police districts, and ended at the Lod interchange, where police killed the kidnapper. On Tuesday the committee watched a reenactment of the final moments of the incident, when police shot the kidnapper and rescued the policewoman. What is clear at this stage of the investigation is that both the Southern and Central police districts are keen on portraying events in a way that reflects well on their handling of the kidnapping, chase and rescue. Advertisement The committee found that the kidnapper, Eyal Peretz, was taught to fire the pistol he stole from the police officer, Irena Gorohod, by the officer herself. The incident began two weeks ago at the Ashdod police station after Peretz was arrested for breaking and entering. He convinced Gorohod to cuff his hands in front of him so that he could drink, and was then able to push her to the floor and draw her pistol from its holster. He then commandeered a patrol car and a chase ensued. It ended at the Lod interchange, where police managed to stop his car. Immediately following the incident, the police Internal Affairs division announced that there was no suspicion of criminal wrongdoing by officers in this case. However, the police established a committee, headed by Commander Yaki Azoulay, to investigate the unfolding of events. One of the committee's first findings was that there was no coordination between the Central and Southern police districts: Police in the Southern district, where the incident began, had decided to chase "at a distance" in the hope that the patrol car Peretz had commandeered would run out of gas and come to a halt. Instead, the Central district embarked on a full-fledged chase, aiming to neutralize Peretz as soon as possible. Moreover, the police officer who shot Peretz was certain that he was aiming at a terrorist, even though the Central district police insisted Tuesday that they were aware that he was not a terrorist. The interim conclusions of the committee were presented to Police Chief David Cohen, who asked that the committee probe the matter further.
