Jewish Agency budget stung by lower donations, weak dollar
By Anshel Pfeffer, Haaretz Correspondent
Tags: Jewish donors, Israel

The Jewish Agency will be forced to cut an estimated $30 million from its budget - about 10 percent - because of a decrease in donations from the United States and the eroding value of those donations due to the falling dollar, organization officials said.

The Jewish Agency is funded by donations from Jews around the world, and two-thirds of the money is sent via the United Jewish Communities of North America. Most of the donations are in dollars, but the Jewish Agency pays its employees in shekels, so the dollar's decline is causing problems.

In addition, the major American Jewish donors have become less willing to contribute to the Jewish Agency's general fund, preferring to donate to their pet projects through private funds. The organization's attempt to find new sources of income by cooperating with Russian-Israeli financier Arcadi Gaydamak last year and the International Fellowship of Christians and Jews this year ran aground due to differences of opinion over control of the funds.

Jewish Agency leaders are due to present a reorganization plan at the board-of-governors meeting in Jerusalem in three weeks.
