Rice: U.S. will cooperate with Israel on missile defense system in face of Iranian threat
By Barak Ravid, Haaretz Correspondent

U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said Tuesday that in the face of the Iranian threat, America will continue to work to improve the capabilities of her allies and will cooperate with Israel in every aspect related to missile defense systems.

Speaking at the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) conference in Washington, Rice said that Iran's actions did not stem from naivety and that it was necessary for America and her allies to exploit Iran's weaknesses. She also said that there was no point in talking to Iran unless the clerical regime there changed its behavior.

She added that in her view, the world must deal with this challenge and should work firmly against the Iranian regime. Through diplomatic actions, economic actions as well as political actions, Iran should be prevented from acquiring nuclear weapons, she said.

Rice made it clear that she did not believe that Iran has quit pursuing nuclear weapons.

The secretary of state also discussed the recently renewed indirect peace negotiations between Israel and Syria, saying that the focus in Israel should remain on the Palestinian peace track.

She voiced her appreciation for Turkish efforts to mediate a peace agreement between Israel and Syria, which she said were aimed at achieving peace between Israel and the Arab world, but stressed that Israel's efforts should concentrate on the Palestinian track at this time, since that is the focus of the Palestinian people and through this path, the most progress will be made.

Rice referred to the U.S. agenda which sees the Israeli-Palestinian conflict as a priority and should be exhausted before an Israel-Syrian settlement is addressed.
