Pioneers or pirates? New novel questions pre-state Zionist narrative
By Haaretz Staff and Channel 10
Tags: Alon Hilu
Haaretz.com/Channel 10 daily feature for June 3, 2008.

A controversial new book that goes back in time to 19th century Tel Aviv challenges the spot reserved in collective Zionist memory for the first wave of Jewish immigration.

The book is Ahuzat Dajani, Hebrew for "The House of Dajani", written by Alon Hilu. It tells the story of Chaim Kalvarisky, a new immigrant who comes to Ottoman-era Jaffa determined to buy up Arab lands to be used for Jewish settlement.

n the work of historical fiction, Kalvarisky works to expel the Dajani estate's inhabitants - an Arab widow and her son. The property in question refers to the plot of land where the Azrieli Center's three skyscrapers stand today and the story is a compilation of fictional diary entries written by Kalvarisky and Saleh, the Arab boy.
