Haaretz Group appoints Gal Vertman as new chief designer
By Haaretz Service

The Haaretz Group has appointed Gal Vertman as its new chief designer. Vertman, who is currently the artistic designer for TheMarker, will be responsible for the design of Haaretz - including the English Edition, TheMarker and the group's Internet sites.

Guy Rolnik, deputy publisher of the Haaretz Group, praised the appointment, saying that Gal, along with newly appointed Haaretz editor-in-chief Dov Alfon and the newspaper's editorial staff, will spearhead changes in design at the newspaper.

"Vertman's design was one of the major factors contributing to TheMarker's success, to the addition of new Haaretz subscribers in the last three years and to the high level of approval the economic newspaper has enjoyed from veteran Haaretz subscribers," Rolnik said.

Vertman, 41, studied art at the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design, and began his professional career as a designer for the local Jerusalem paper "Yerushalmi." In 1997, he established, along with Yaron Ten-Brink, the "Tel Aviv Online Newspaper," and roughly three years later, he joined Haaretz as the designer for the weekly supplement "Captain Internet."

Six months later, Vertman became the designer for TheMarker, which was established that year by Guy Rolnik and Dov Alfon, the monthly magazine's first editor. During Vertman's tenure at TheMarker, its readership skyrocketed, and the magazine today sells between 40,000 and 50,000 copies a month.

In January 2005, Gal Vertman unveiled a new design for the new daily edition of the magazine. The new design emphasized information graphics and the use of fluorescent green, both of which became TheMarker's trademarks.

Alongside his professional career, Vertman has pursued artistic endeavors, which began during his days at Bezalel. He has exhibited his work in Israel and abroad - including at the Israel Museum, the Tel Aviv Museum, the Jewish Museum in New York, and MuHKA, the Museum of Modern Art in Antwerp.

Vertman will replace Eran Wolkowski, who was the designer for a number of Haaretz Group newspapers and supplements, including "Kol Ha'ir," "Hadashot" and "Ha'ir." He was responsible for the design and artistic management of Haaretz since 1990. Volkovsky intends to devote more time to his art, and will continue to contribute to Haaretz as its senior political illustrator.

Of his appointment, Vertman said, "I am extremely excited. My designs change in accordance with the character of the newspaper and the era in which we operate, and it will be a fascinating challenge for me, and of course a great honor, to replace Eyal.
