IAF strikes Gaza after Qassams wound five people in Negev
By Mijal Grinberg and Yuval Azoulay, Haaretz Correspondents, DPA
Tags: Gaza, gunmen, Israel

An Israel Air Force strike wounded three Islamic Jihad militants in the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip on Tuesday after cross-border rockets fired from the territory wounded five people in Israel.

One of the Islamic Jihad militants was critically injured in the air strike near the southern Gaza town of Khan Yunis, medical officials and Islamic Jihad said.

An Israel Defense Forces spokesman said the air strike had targeted a single "armed Palestinian as he was preparing to launch rockets" into Israel.

The spokesman said the same area had been used by militants earlier in the day to launch rockets at Israel.

At least three rockets struck the Eshkol Regional Council earlier in the day, and two of them caused injuries. One person suffered moderate wounds and the rest were lightly hurt. All of the injuries were caused by shrapnel from the rockets. The Israel Defense Forces said a Thai laborer was among the wounded.

Two of the rockets stuck open areas, and the third struck a chicken coop in Moshav Yesha, where a woman was killed by a Qassam roughly one month ago. That rocket caused damage to a nearby structure.

Several hours earlier, a Katyusha rocket struck an open field in the Eshkol Regional Council. The rocket did not cause any injuries nor damage, but the Red Color alert system did not sound before it struck. Preliminary reports suggested the rocket was smaller than the Grad-type Katyushas that have been fired from Gaza in the past.

IDF soldier moderately wounded in Gaza
Also on Tuesday, a Palestinian gunman wounded an Israel Defense Forces soldier operating in the Gaza Strip near the Kissufim crossing on Tuesday morning.

The soldier was evacuated to Soroka Medical Center in Be'er Sheva with wounds described as moderate.

The shooting attack in Gaza occured while IDF troops were operating in the coastal territory, close to the Israeli border, and came under sniper fire.

One dead, four injured in Gaza tunnel collapse

An underground tunnel in the southern Gaza Strip town of Rafah
collapsed Monday night, killing one person, Palestinian security officials said Tuesday.

Four other men caught in the tunnel cave-in were taken to the hospital suffering the effects of suffocation.

Rafah residents estimate that hundreds of tunnels are dug under the adjacent Egyptian border and used to smuggle weapons, fuel, medicines and other goods into the Gaza Strip.

Hamas, which administers the Strip, turns a blind eye to the smuggling, which has increased after Israel intensified its blockade of Gaza, and Egypt closed the Rafah border crossing point, after the Islamist movement seized control of the enclave nearly one year ago.
