State reneges on green deal for Wadi Ara Jewish town
By Zafrir Rinat
Tags: State, Wadi Ara, Shai Avital

Shai Avital, director general of the Environmental Protection Ministry, will back plans to establish a new Jewish community in Wadi Ara at a meeting of the National Council for Planning and Construction today. The council has refused to approve an Arab community there, Dar al-Hanun, for decades, citing "environmental damage."

The Society for the Protection of Nature in Israel (SPNI) Monday accused Avital of imposing government dictate on ministry experts opposed to the new community.

The site is located near Katzir and Harish, in the largely Arab Wadi Ara region. Four years ago, a few dozen families settled there. They are seeking to become a recognized community, named Mitzpe Iron. In a cabinet meeting, Environmental Protection Minister Gideon Ezra objected to establishing the community based on advice from his ministry's experts, who said the area was earmarked for preservation.

However, Avital recently toured the area, and apparently changed his mind. He said establishing the community would not harm the environment, and would help to prevent other communities' expansion. He did not say which communities, but it is clear from previous discussions that he was referring to Arab communities.
