Senior IDF officer loses 'top secret' security documents

An Israel Defense Forces major has lost highly classified security documents, Channel 2 reported Monday. According to the report, the IDF officer had saved the classified documents onto an MP4 digital player, which has since landed into the hands of strangers.

Some of the documents found are marked "top secret" and are of the highest security classification level. These documents also explicitly state that it is illegal to have them copied or saved.

It is believed that the digital player was passed on to the major's daughter, before getting lost and eventually being passed over to Channel 2 reporters. In response to the report, the officer maintained that he was not aware his daughter had taken the MP4 player.

Regarding the misplacement of classified material, Chief of Staff Gabi Ashkenazi stressed in the past that the IDF treats such cases with gravity. It is therefore likely that the officer will be released from military duties.

In response to the report, an IDF spokesperson said that "it is a serious information security crime that was committed by a senior officer and will be treated both by a security investigation, as well as by the military police."
