Barak to demand extra NIS 400m to boost Gaza border communities security

Defense Minister Ehud Barak and his deputy Matan Vilnai are to demand that the government immediately increase its budget for the additional safeguarding of communities bordering on Gaza, costs that may accumulate to NIS 400 million.

Over the past seven years, militants in the Gaza Strip have bombarded the western Negev with incessant rocket fire. These attacks, which have wounded and killed, have led to demands by residents in the targeted communities for increased protection.

Vilnai and Barak will call upon the government at its next session to extend a plan approved in February to fortify 3,600 homes that are situated within a 4.5-kilometer range of the Gaza Strip against rocket fire.

The plan proposed by Barak and Vilnai, also known by the Defense Ministry as the "Second Phase for Gaza border communities," will compel the government to safeguard a total of 4,700 homes in the area.

The second stage of the plan will thus safeguard homes within a 7 kilometer range of the fence.

In the past few days, pamphlets explaining the relevant safeguarding options were handed out to Sderot and other Gaza-border-community residents. The Defense Ministry has also proposed the option of residents privately installing their own rooms fortified against rocket attacks, in return for government funding.
