Not just for the birds...

Tags: green, Holon

The array of new construction projects going up in Holon has created an unexpected problem: not enough trees to go around. After the city realized that planting trees is not taken for granted, it took the remarkable step of making building permits contingent on trees being planted according to detailed specifications drawn up by the municipal architecture and landscape gardening departments.

The resulting directives were attached to applications for building permits. Last week the planting requirement was ratified by the municipal planning and building subcommittee, which is headed by Mayor Motti Sasson.

Under the new regulations, any developer who wants to build an office or residential building will be required to plant a tree on every 60 square meters remaining on his lot after construction. For example, a developer who builds a 400-square-meter residential building on a 1-dunam lot will have to plant 10 trees.

Factories and office buildings being planned for the barren industrial zone in the eastern part of Holon will be required to plant a tree every 8-11 meters along their main facades.

New public parking lots will have to have one tree planted for every five parking spots, but the city will not dictate the types of trees, except to bar trees that commonly trigger allergies.

"Planting trees will turn Holon into a city with better air quality, since trees absorb pollution from transportation and industry," architect Shira Gorali from the municipality's long-term planning division explains. "Trees lower the temperature by two or three degrees, and that helps prevent global warming. Pedestrians will also get shady sidewalks, and fewer residents will use their cars. And let's not forget about the birds," Gorali added.
