Doctors protest rising violence against health personnel
By Yuval Azoulay, Haaretz Correspondent

The heads of the Israel Medical Association and senior doctors from across the country will stage a demonstration on Monday across from the Health Ministry building in Jerusalem in protest of a recent rash of violent attacks directed at medical professionals in hospitals and clinics.

The decision to stage the protest was made after Dr. Marius Guy of Rehovot's Kaplan Hospital was brutally attacked by a patient last week and sustained serious injuries.

Sheba Hospital in Tel Hashomer reported Sunday that Guy was recovering from the screwdriver stab wounds in his back and was no longer being treated in the intensive care unit of the hospital.

The doctors will protest what they call the "Health Ministry's helplessness" which they feel exposes doctors to severe violence in hospitals and health clinics. The demonstrators, among them members of hospital councils from across the nation, will call upon Health Minister Ya'acov Ben-Yizri to formulate a plan and take immediate steps to end the violence against doctors.

The chairman of the Israel Medical Association, Yoram Blashar, announced Sunday that "when a doctor who is our friend is hurt, there is only one topic on the agenda as far as we're concerned, and that is violence against doctors."

Surgeons in several hospitals disrupted the day to day operations in protest of the violence. Only emergency operations were conducted in these hospitals. "We have to take off the gloves and show our rage over this impossible situation," said one of the members of the surgeon's union over the weekend.

The measures taken by the surgeons sparked a disagreement with the Israel Medical Association, who said that the surgeons did not coordinate their moves with the rest of the medical community, and that it was causing unnecessary suffering for the patients.
