Israel to launch PR campaign against Ahmadinejad visit to UN summit

Israel will launch a PR campaign to coincide with this week's visit by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to Rome where he will take part in a world food summit organized by the Rome-based United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization.

The Foreign Ministry has earmarked a special budget for the campaign, to be organized by the Israeli embassy in Rome and local Italian Jewish organizations.

Ahmadinejad, who has called for the destruction of Israel, is slated to be in Rome for the summit from Tuesday through Thursday.

The Israeli ambassador to Italy was quoted on Saturday as saying it was a disgrace that the United Nations food agency invited Ahmadinejad to the summit.

"To imagine on the podium of a UN organization a leader who calls for the destruction of a member state is a disgrace for every democrat," Ambassador Gideon Meier was quoted as saying in an interview in the daily La Repubblica.

"And let's not talk about the rest. He denies the Holocaust , he is the principal actor behind terrorism, he has a military nuclear program, he violates human rights of the Iranian people," Meier said, according to La Repubblica.

Meier expressed confidence that Premier Silvio Berlusconi would not acknowledge the Iranian's visit.

"Italy has a clear position supporting the UN resolutions on Iran," Meier was quoted as saying.

Italy's foreign minister has said a meeting with Berlusconi is unlikely.

In Iran, government spokesman Gholam Hossein Elham on Saturday confirmed that Ahmadinejad would visit Italy to attend the summit only, and did not plan to meet with Italian government officials or the pope, the IRNA news agency reported.
