Israel Defense Forces tanks and infantry raided the northern Gaza Strip before dawn yesterday, and rounded up some 60 Palestinian suspects. The prisoners were passed on to be interrogated by the Shin Bet security forces. A few hours later, Palestinian militants fired three Qassam rockets and three mortar shells at Israeli territory. No injuries or damage was reported.

Also yesterday, the Ministry of Defense and the Ministry of Agriculture agreed to provide 20 bullet-proof tractors for Israeli farmers in the villages surrounding the Gaza Strip. Under the plan, devised by Deputy Defense Minister Matan Vilnai, farmers with plots within a kilometer from the border fence will be the first to receive the armored vehicles. The first four tractors will be ready within a few weeks, and the remaining 16 over the next couple of months. The Defense Ministry said that more agricultural vehicles will be armored if its budget permits. (Yuval Azoulay)

Germany's parliament yesterday marked Israel's 60th anniversary, with Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier underlining his country's commitment to the Jewish state. "From the responsibility for the past grows the commitment for the future," Steinmeier said, referring to the Holocaust. He also underlined Germany's desire to do more to help advance Middle East peace efforts. Chancellor Angela Merkel attended the session in Berlin's restored Reichstag building, but did not address the legislature. In March, Merkel became the first German head of government to address the Knesset. (AP)

MK Zahava Gal-On asked Interior Minister Meir Sheetrit yesterday to rescind the decision to deport a German national living in Israel for more than a decade. The Meretz MK argued that Barbara Ludwig, 32, be allowed to stay in the country and complete her studies at the Hebrew University. Ludwig was slated for deportation after she was accused of involvement in missionary work, a claim she has denied. "I don't see how a student's private activities should have any affect over whether she is given permission to stay as a student," Gal-On wrote. (Ofri Ilani)

Bahrain's king has appointed a Jewish woman as its envoy to Washington, making her the first Jew in the Arab world to become an ambassador. King Hamad bin Isa al-Khalifa named lawmaker Houda Nonoo, a 43-year-old mother of two boys, as an ambassador on Wednesday, the official Bahrain News Agency reported yesterday. The decree did not say where she would be posted. But Nonoo confirmed she will be U.S. ambassador for the tiny Gulf nation. She said she was proud to serve her country first of all as a Bahraini, adding she was not chosen for the post because of her religion. Bahrain has about 50 Jewish citizens among a population of some half a million. (AP)

A Haredi (ultra-Orthodox) man from Jerusalem was laid to rest without an autopsy yesterday, ending four days of protests by his community against the prosecution's original decision to perform the post-mortem. David Williger's car went up in flames on Monday after it was struck by a truck. The prosecution wanted to conduct an autopsy to determine whether he died in the crash, or from other causes before the accident occurred, as some evidence indicated. His family, however, objected, and community rabbis sanctioned a series of protests that eventually led to the post-mortem being shelved. (Yair Ettinger)

The state cannot determine the death circumstances of Gabriel Dawit, whose body was returned to Israel by Hezbollah in October last year, the State Prosecution told Dawit's family yesterday. Dawit, who went missing two years ago, is believed to have drowned and drifted to Lebanon. His parents, who found out only after the body's return that the state knew already in July that Hezbollah had it, demanded an inquiry. The family's attorney said yesterday that after examining the inquiry dossier it would decide on its next move. (Mijal Grinberg)
