Abusive nursery school teacher jailed for one and a half years

A Be'er Sheva District Court judge on Thursday sentenced an Ashkelon nursery school teacher to one and a half years in prison for attacking the children in her care and seriously harming one of them.

Ahuva Kahlon, 38, managed a private nursery school, where she forcefully seated the children on seats and pulled their hair. In the case of one child, she lifted him in the air and tossed him on a mattress, causing him serious injury.

The court also ruled that Kahlon would compensate each of her victims with NIS 3,000.

Kahlon was arrested in 2003 after suspicions about her reached the youth unit of the Southern District Police. She was accused of neglecting the children in her care, of sending them home hungry and thirsty and, in some cases, with bruises resulting from abuse.

Throughout the affair, Kahlon denied the accusations against her and claimed that her assistant was libeling Kahlon because she fired her.
