State to give Gush Katif evacuees NIS 1.5b more compensation

A decisive majority of 70 Knesset members agreed Wednesday night to grant an extra NIS 1.5 billion to the Jewish settlers evacuated from Gush Katif and the northern Gaza Strip.

The amendment of the compensation law bill won support in its preliminary reading into law from a rainbow coalition of parliamentarians, including members of the Labor Party and left-leaning party Meretz.

The treasury, which opposes the amendment, says it will increase total compensation to the evacuees from NIS 6 billion to NIS 7.5 billion, or NIS 3.37 million on average per family instead of NIS 3 million. Ultimately the ones to bear the extra expense will the taxpayers.

Top officials at the Prime Minister's Office also oppose the amendment, but Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's position could not be elucidated as of print time.

Behind the amendment stands Kadim MK Zeev Elkin, joined by parliamentarians of the right wing - and of the Labor Party. The most financially significant section of the amendment increases compensation to farmers who cannot resume an agricultural way of life to a pension equivalent to 70% of the minimum wage.

Former farmers will also receive compensation for three growing seasons according to a profit multiple of 8 rather than 7. That sum could reach NIS 250,000 per growing season per farmer.

Elkin says the amendment is designed to eliminate problems that arose since the original disengagement law was enacted about three years ago.
