Patient stabs doctor with screwdriver after surgery is postponed
By Haaretz Service

A 64-year-old Rehovot man, enraged by his doctor's decision to postpone a surgery, used a screwdriver to stab the doctor multiple times on Wednesday.

The doctor, a member of the Kaplan hospital urological unit, suffered severe injuries in the attack.
Following the stabbing, the hospital staff announced that they will disrupt the hospital's daily routine in protest of the attack, and will only perform emergency surgeries.

Shortly after 12 p.m., the man arrived at the hospital's emergency room in order to receive medical care. During a routine check-up, the patient attacked his doctor, 58, and stabbed him in the back, stomach, left arm and shoulder. The victim was found near his office by a secretary and was cared for by a friend and colleague. He was later taken to the Tel Hashomer hospital in Tel Aviv.

The assailant fled immediately after the attack. The Rehovot police closed down the Kaplan hospital in order to apprehend the suspect. However, on Wednesday afternoon, the suspect turned himself in to police and confessed to attacking the doctor.

During questioning, the man told police investigators that he had been the victim's patient for many years, and was angry at him for postponing a surgery. According to the suspect, his doctor had been unsympathetic to his suffering and pain for some time. Police will ask the Rishon Letzion Magistrates Court to extend the suspect's remand.

Dr. Yoram Belsher, head of the Israeli Medical Association condemned the stabbing. "The state of Israel has failed to protect the lives of its doctors," he said. Belsher emphasized his frustration with the Knesset's rejection in the past, of a bill intended to punish criminals who become violent with medical staff.

Attacks of this kind do not occur frequently. In past months however, several similar attacks against doctors by their patients have occurred. This has caused police to decree a "zero tolerance" policy in dealing with these types of attacks
