Israel sends third relief team to aid cyclone-ravaged Burma
By Haaretz Service

Israel on Wednesday dispatched a third disaster relief team to areas of Burma devastated by Cyclone Nargis earlier this month.

The team comprises medical personnel and training and logistics specialists.

Israel also sent relief workers four days after the cyclone struck Burma's Irrawaddy delta and its main city Yangon on May 3.

IsraAID - the Israeli organization dispatching the relief teams - has already shipped 10 tons of relief supplies to the country, and dispatched medical specialists to train 500 local doctors to deal with the large-scale disaster.

IsraAID earlier this week sent a representative to join Israel's Ambassador to Yangon for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) conference on Sunday, which was held to raise funds for the disaster relief efforts.

In the days following the cyclone, the Foreign Ministry sent $100,000 in initial emergency food and medical supplies to survivors.

Cyclone Nagris has left more than 130,000 people dead or missing. The United Nations estimates that 1.5 million survivors in the hardest-hit regions have yet to receive aid.

The country's ruling military junta had barred relief groups from entering areas devastated by the cyclone, but has recently begun to allow aid to make its way to survivors.
