Sacked Israeli coach Grant hires Diana lawyer to confront Chelsea bosses
By Haaretz Service
Tags: Chelsea, Avram Grant

Avram Grant, the Israeli soccer coach abruptly sacked at the weekend after his Chelsea team narrowly lost the Champions League final to Manchester United, has engaged a prominent British Jewish attorney who represented Princess Diana in her divorce from Prince Charles, to negotiate his severance terms.

The attorney, Anthony Julius, a vocal opponent of anti-Semitism, is also known for having defended U.S. historian Deborah Lipstadt in a libel suit brought by author and convicted Holocaust-denier David Irving, and for having represented Heather Mills in her divorce from Paul McCartney.

Hired just eight months ago by Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich, with whom Grant had been on close terms, the Israeli coach "has told friends that he felt betrayed at the manner of his dismissal, being told that he was being sacked only on Saturday morning when it had been an open secret in football circles for several weeks," The Times reported Tuesday.

It said Grant, whose West London club was also edged by United in the race for the prestigious English Premier League championship, is also upset over a reported five million pounds in severance compensation, far less than the 12 million pounds paid to his predecessor Jose Mourinho, fired in September.

Grant's term as coach was shadowed by skeptical fans and an often hostile British press. In recent days, he has been widely tipped as the next coach of Manchester City, whose present coach, Sven-Goran Eriksson, is expected to be dismissed soon.
