Terror victim's brother: Samir Kuntar must stay in prison
By Jack Khoury, Haaretz Correspondent

Ron Keren, the brother of Danny Haran who was murdered by Samir Kuntar, a Lebanese terrorist who was part of a cell that killed four Israelis after landing in a rubber boat in Nahariya in 1979, on Monday expressed his opposition to a deal with Hezbollah that would include Kuntar's release, saying that "he was given four life sentences and he must remain in prison."

Kuntar has been imprisoned in Israel since the 1979 attack.

onetheless, when Haran was asked about kidnapped Israel Defense Forces soldiers Ehud Goldwasser and Eldad Regev, currently held by Hezbollah, he said "if they [Goldwasser and Regev] are alive, that's something different. But it must be noted, that if we release all the Lebanese prisoners, it will leave Israel without a single card to play if we want information on Ron Arad. We will never know his fate and it will remain a stain and a failure on Israel forever."

Danny Haran's widow, Smadar Haran, refused to comment on the proposed release of Kuntar.

The families of Regev and Goldwasser did not voice exceptional excitement over the reports of a possibly imminent prisoner exchange. Ehud Goldwasser's father Shlomo said that he didn't believe that the comment made by Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah, who proclaimed that Kuntar would soon be released, was serious, and that if he was serious about negotiating a deal with Israel, "he would allow the Red Cross to visit the kidnapped soldiers in Lebanon."

Karnit Goldwasser, Ehud's wife, didn't comment on Nasrallah's statement, nor did she comment on reports earlier in the day about significant advancement in the negotiations over a prisoner exchange deal. She did, however, say that the head of negotiations on Israel's behalf, Ofer Dekel, was updating her regularly. "Without going into details of the updates, I can't talk about what we know, I hope that the report is true and that there really was a breakthrough," she said.

Miki Golwasser, Ehud's mother, said that the family did not have any new information and that it couldn't respond to the reports. "We don't know yet what is happening in Lebanon, after the agreements that brought Hezbollah back into the political arena. Anything can happen - the report could turn out to be true, or alternately, nothing but spin. We, at least, don't know of anything new," she said.

Eyal Regev, the brother of Eldad, said "we hope that report is reliable and that there will be a breakthrough soon, but beyond that, we have nothing to say. No one told us of any new developments or details."
