Abbas: Olmert probe could further derail peace talks

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said over the weekend that peace talks with Israel could further be delayed, due to the corruption investigation currently underway against Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and the looming presidential elections in the United States.

A senior aide said over the weekend that Abbas "hopes that recent developments, like the investigation into the Israeli prime minister and the preparations for the elections in the U.S., will not harm the peace process that is dear to the Palestinians."

Abbas told senior members of his Fatah movement on Saturday that nothing has been achieved in the peace talks.

He said he rejects any attempts to delay negotiations over the core issues in the conflict, including the division of Jerusalem and the right of return for Palestinian refugees.

The chief Palestinian negotiation, Ahmed Qureia, said that the Palestinians will only accept a comprehensive deal, according to a participant at the Fatah session on Saturday.

Israel has said the fate of Jerusalem would be put off until later in the U.S.-backed talks.

The sides have set a year-end target for reaching an accord, though both have suggested that it may be overly optimistic.

Abbas said last month during a coversation with MK Yossi Beilin on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Egypt that he would resign from his position in six months if progress has not been made.

Olmert, for his part, told The Times in an interview last week that he hopes Abbas retains his post as the sides struggle for a deal.

"I hope he [Abbas] will not step down and I hope that in six months we will be in a different place altogether," he told the British daily. "I still think that the basic distance between what I and [Abbas] exchanged at the very initial stage was bridgeable.

Olmert had suggested recently that only guidelines for an agreement might be possible.
