Grant to receive over $10m in severance from Chelsea

Former Chelsea manager Avram Grant will reportedly receive a severance package worth over $10 million, following his termination in the wake of Chelsea's loss to Manchester United in the Champions League final in Moscow last Wednesday.

The football club posted a message on its official website Saturday that read "Grant Leaves Chelsea," adding that the manager had his contract terminated after meetings held the previous two days.

Chelsea Chief Executive Peter Kenyon was quoted by the BBC last week as saying "it's been an interesting season, but you don't like finishing second and as runners-up. Given the standards we've set, that's not something we've settled for."

Even though Grant lead Chelsea to the club's first ever Champions League Final after a big win over Liverpool, he was not able to gain a vote of confidence for next season during a meeting held with friend and Chelsea owner Roman Abramovitch before the match in Moscow.

Also, sources in the club's management predicted last Sunday that Grant would be terminated after the season even if the club were to defeat Manchester United in the Champions League final and in spite of his having three years left on his contract.

Initial steps to remove Grant from the club began in earnest on Thursday morning, hours after the defeat in Moscow. Abramovitch, Kenyon, and Chelsea CFO Eugene Tennenbaum reportedly held meetings till the early hours of the morning, with the clear goal of determining a way to expedite Grant's removal.

Grant was made Director of Football at Chelsea last July, and become manager of the club after the departure of Jose Mourinho last September.

The announcement of Grant's termination was delayed while the club negotiated a return for Grant to his previous role as director of football, a move Grant refused, and also in order to agree to a compensation package, which in the end was nearly the equivalent of the remaining money on his contract ? over $10 million.

Grant is reportedly looking for a managerial post elsewhere in the Premier League, and Manchester City FC is said to be the most likely spot for Grant to land, with Grant's connections with club ownership and the recent departure of the club's manager.
