Last update - 07:39 25/05/2008 'Israeli Big Lebowski' captures top student prize at Cannes By Haaretz Service Tags: Elad Keidan  The Israeli film "Anthem" won first place prize at the Cannes film festivals' student competition on Friday. This marks the first time an Israeli short has clinched this award at the fest. The 36-minute-long film, directed by Elad Keidan, deals with an eccentric man who goes to buy milk at a grocery store in Jerusalem's Katamonim neighborhood and meets various people along the way. "It's like an Israeli 'Big Lebowski,'" Keidan told Haaretz, "but an existential 'Big Lebowski.'" The director said he drew inspiration for the film from Iranian cinema as well as from the work of legendary filmmaker David Perlov. Advertisement Keidan directed the film last January as part of his final project at the Sam Spiegel School of Film and Television. The film was later submitted for consideration at the festival. "The screening went very well, the reactions were very, very good," Keidan said. "We felt that people really enjoyed the film and that they completely understood it." After the screening, Keidan said he remembered telling the production crew that the film was likely to grab one of the top spots at the festival. During the student competition ceremony, the presenters - in Oscar-like fashion - announced the Israeli film as the winner. After the unprecedented feat, Keidan said he plans to return to Israel to attempt to get his foot in the door of the local film industry. "I have plans for short films and longer films and [plans] to slowly build something," Keidan said. "The desire is to make movies in Israel.
