An Israel Defense Forces soldier was lightly wounded on Wednesday when a mortar shell fire by militants in Gaza exploded near him at the Zikkim base near Ashkelon.

The soldier sustained light shrapnel wounds and was taken to the Barzilai Medical Center for treatment.

Earlier Wednesday struck a car carrying members of Qassam launching cell in northern Gaza, a short while after the militants launched rockets towards Israeli territory.

Also Wednesday, an IDF soldier was lightly injured when a Palestinian man driving a stolen car ran him over near Tul Karm.

The soldier received medical aid on the scene and was later taken to hospital in Kfar Sava. IDF troops began searching the area for the Palestinian, who escaped after the incident. IDF officials assess that he reached Tul Karm.

Meanwhile, Hamas on Wednesday claimed that IDF soldiers stationed on Israel's border with the Gaza Strip shot dead a Palestinian militant.

Sources identified the dead man as Mohamed al-Bahaisa, 24, of the Iz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades, the armed wing of the radical Islamic Hamas movement ruling Gaza.

Witnesses said they heard an intense exchange of gunfire in the area. An IDF spokeswoman said she was unaware of a firefight, but said she would check the report.
