3 killed, including teen, in Gaza Strip air strike

A 13-year-old boy, an unidentified man and a Hamas militant were killed in at least three Israel Air Force strikes on targets in the Gaza Strip yesterday, according to Palestinian doctors and Hamas.

But despite the violence, Israeli defense officials estimated that an Egyptian-brokered cease-fire could take effect within the next few days.

The Israel Defense Forces confirmed that it conducted three air strikes. In the first, aircraft flying over the northeastern Gaza Strip fired at a group of Palestinians launching rockets, the army said. But Gaza medical workers said the militants fled the area shortly before the air strike took place.

Palestinian doctors said this strike killed a 13-year-old boy and seriously wounded another youth.

In the second strike, aircraft fired at Palestinians who were planting explosives along the border fence, the army said. Palestinian doctors said one man, 32, was killed. His identity was not immediately known.

Later yesterday, the Air Force hit a Qassam rocket squad in the northern Gaza Strip. There were no immediate reports of Palestinian casualties in that strike.

Finally, Hamas said that one of its fighters was killed and two wounded in a fourth Israeli attack, to the south of Gaza City. The Israeli military said aircraft were in action in that area, but had no immediate details and could not confirm that an air strike had occurred.
