Ashkelon Mayor Roni Mahatzri investigated for sexual assault

Tags: sexual harassment

The National Fraud Investigative Unit interrogated Ashkelon Mayor Roni Mahatzri for seven hours on Tuesday on suspicion of sexual assault and sexual harassment.

The questioning comes after an Ashkelon woman came forward in February to complain that Mahatzri had attacked her several times during the last few years.

The woman gave an interview to Yedioth Ahronot, which also published photographs taken with a hidden camera. They reportedly show Mahatzri offering the woman a job while simultaneously hugging her, touching her behind and seating her on his lap.

The complainant claimed in the interview that Mahatzri sexually assaulted her over the course of one year and that on one occasion he pulled her to him while his underwear was off. A polygraph test showed the woman to be telling the truth.

Police said that the fraud unit handled the investigation because it had questioned the Ashkelon mayor in the past.

In a response to prior accusations, Mahatzri issued a statement saying that the the attacks against him are politically motivated and collected to upcoming elections.

Mahatzri added that he is "relying on and certain that the police will bring the truth to light."
