Chelsea's Avram Grant fails to secure vote of confidence for next season

Chelsea Manager Avram Grant had many expectations on the eve of his meeting with club owner Roman Abramovich last week, but reportedly was not able to secure from club ownership the assurance that he will be around to coach the club next year.

Even though Grant lead Chelsea to the club's first ever Champions League Final after a big win over Liverpool, he was not able to gain a vote of confidence for next season. Also, sources in the club's management said Sunday that in spite of the fact that he has three more years on his contract, he will probably be receiving his walking papers soon, even if the club defeats Manchester United Wednesday to win the Champions League Final.

In Moscow Sunday, Grant said "it's obvious that I have something to prove in the final. Even if I won ten titles in ten years I'd still have something to prove. Its what I always tell my players, the second you think you don't have anything to prove, you're in trouble. That's sports."

Grant has been regularly maligned in the British and Israeli press since he became Chelsea coach last year. He has been seen by many as an outsider and underqualified, as well as lacking personal charm. In addition, his relative anonymity before his promotion has led many to whisper that his close relationship with Abramovich played some role.
